A Scenic Travel Across North Carolina

Interstate I-40 provides the traveler with many views of North Carolina. Entering the State from Tennessee, I-40 twists and turns through the majestic Smoky Mountains and quickly approaches Asheville home of Biltimore Estates. Gradually the land levels out and settles into the rolling Piedmont where furniture and textile businesses support Hickory and High Point. After crossing I-77 passing 45 miles north of Charlotte, the highway passes by Winston-Salem-the home of RJR and Old Salem Village.

The traffic picks up in Greensboro a diversified manufacturing center as the Highway merges with I-85. An expanded highway lets you zoom through Burlington and its well-known B.M.O.C. In the academic heartland of North Carolina, I-40 bypasses Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh known for their educational contributions to the Research Triangle Park After leaving the Capitol City, I-40 turns south, crosses I-95 passing near Smithfield, and heads into the sandy farmlands of the coastal plain. The terrain and weather change as the road approaches the historic city of Wilmington and quaint Bald Head Island.
